In With the New: Replacing Concrete Seawalls With Vinyl Seawalls

02 Nov.,2023

Is your seawall starting to crumble? If you’re in coastal Florida and your seawall is of any considerable age, it was probably constructed with concrete.

Concrete is porous, so it allows salty sea water to permeate the structure. This weakens the concrete itself, and the salt rusts and corrodes the steel rebar that reinforces the coast line.

The Vinyl Seawall Fix

If your old wall is still standing, you can avoid costly and time-consuming demolition by going right in front of the old wall with new vinyl. Contractors will install the EverLast sheet piling outside of the old wall while seamlessly tying in new steel rod supports.

By building a new vinyl seawall outside of the old wall, you can avoid the gutting process entirely. The old wall will no longer function strength-wise, but instead will be used in place of graded dirt.

Benefits of Building Out With Vinyl

Along with cutting costs, building out from an existing seawall considerably diminishes the environmental footprint of reparative seawall construction. You also gain a seawall with expert engineering and cutting-edge materials. Vinyl is long-lasting and lightweight, and it should hold up for decades.

Skipping the demo has another perk: you gain a few new feet of waterfront property! If you’re in an area where everything along the water is narrow, this can feel like a big difference.

We’ve even had customers request twenty feet of sandy play area between their old seawall and the new vinyl construction. Building out this extensively can only be done in more remote, calmer waters, but it’s a viable option and a great way to extend your backyard.
