Hi everyone,

I've been noticing iron buildup stains after taking a shower in either bathroom. I scrub it, but a couple weeks later the stains return. I also notice a residue on my dishes and on my clean laundry. I'm starting to wonder if I should concern one of those whole house water filtration systems.

I'm just not sure if they are worth the investment. I have not received any quotes yet but it seems like they can cost $2,000. Gulp! And yearly filter changes are needed.

Does anyone have one or considered one? What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Link to an article that explains some of this:

Iron in Drinking Water

Get your water analyzed. Yes, the staining suggests iron, but there are two basic types of iron in tap water; ferrous and ferric and other minerals and organics can complicate things. You need to know what's present. The mechanism/process you'd want in order to reduce staining will be specific. I've had well water in several different houses over the last 25 years and iron was present in each to varying degrees. The water conditioner/softener/iron removal system each house required to reduce it was unique to the well.Link to an article that explains some of this:

In my last house I installed a $2000 system as you mention. It worked well but was expensive.

In my current house I put in a system from Expresswater. They sell direct or on Amazon and a 3 filter system was around $500 plus the cost of a handyman to install it.

Here’s one designed to remove metals. I am not affiliated with them, just a happy customer.

I also bought their RO under sink filter system for around $150.

Both work well 2 years later. I’m on city water so obviously not a well.

You can get test kits at places like Home Depot. If you have county water, it is pretty gross. I had a townhouse and the first time I flushed my water heater, it was like piles and piles of junk coming out. My mom gets the red rings around everything. I typically just used a shower head filter and pitcher system in my fridge because I did not have water come out of the fridge. City water in Tampa is better than county.

If it is new it may be that the hot water tank is causing the problem. Here is an article that explains the possibilities.

If you have an iron problem, you will need an iron filter to avoid clogging up a whole house filter. Once you have good iron filter, you may decide that you do nto need a whole house filter. Whole house filters are expensive to maintain. You may also want to bypass the filter for your outside spigots and possibly sinks. Many people only filter their drinking water. There is no real need to filter out chlorine or other things an iron filter and if needed a water softener fail to remove for thinks like washing hands or dishes or showering.

Good point about outside spigots - I don’t run these through my whole house filter.

What would you consider expensive to maintain? I pay around $100 a year for replacement filters.Good point about outside spigots - I don’t run these through my whole house filter.

I had a "whole house" system installed from CostCo, last Summer. Yes, it was expensive. (I WISH it was only $2000...)

Is it worth it? I think so. I no longer have to go downtown to buy water by the 5 gallon bottle. (It's 90 cents per gallon.) I had 3 bottles I put into rotation.

My system filters, conditions, softens the water, as I want it. I haven't had to add salt to the hopper yet. (Probably should check it now, as it's been 4-5 months, now.)

All my water is conditioned. Outside spigots too. I know my laundry and dishwasher are going to live longer, because of the softer water.
Our muni water is harder than a 10 minute egg!

I can use this water straight away, for my hummingbird feeders too.
