Dive into anything

Sorry if this topic has been here before, I can't find it anywhere. In fact I can't find anything about this anywhere on the internet. The city where I live took over a wave pool that had previously been privately owned. It is one of those pools that creates a huge wave at one end with swimmers swimming into whatever level of water that they feel comfortable with. I am trying to figure out if there is any benefit to swimming in such a pool? As a point to note, this pool is not for surfers (there is some stuff on the internet about surfing in such pools).

The closest that I can figure out is that this would be comparable to running outside versus running on a treadmill. A treadmill is a controlled environment, and you can control your movement more, which is typically a bad thing because you need a lot of range of motion to best benefit from exercise. This would be true in the more chaotic environment of a wave pool, but there are a couple of counterpoints as well. First of all, even in a pool, it is not like swimming really suffers from range of motion. Secondly it is not as though you can swim laps at the wave pool.

I figure that it is mostly something that I could do that is just something different, not necessarily with much fitness benefit. Any thoughts?
