What We Like

  • Large loop pile

  • Longer than average

  • 25+ colors

What We Don’t Like

  • Pricey

Thicker than many of the other options we tested, the Frontgate Resort Cotton Bath Towel has a luxe, hotel-quality feel that will hold up wash after wash. In our lab testing, we found this to be a slightly longer-than-average towel, which makes it perfect for taller users or those who like more coverage. Available in a whopping 27 colors, it’s made with long-staple Turkish cotton that has been finely combed for a soft, blanket-like texture. The large, loop-pile weave and 700 GSM (that’s grams per square meter, which correlates with thickness) weight give it a plush feel that’s a step above the rest.

According to Whitney Thornburg, design director at Coyuchi, absorbency is one of the most important factors to consider when shopping for towels. “A great way to check [a towel’s absorbency] is to just spill a bit of water onto your towel. It should immediately be absorbed—not pill or bead on the towel,” she says. “If it doesn’t dry you off post-shower, it’s not doing its job.” During testing, we were particularly impressed with this towel’s absorbent properties: It was able to soak up to a quarter of a cup of water in just a few minutes, and it dried our hands in two passes.

While we weren’t a huge fan of the colorway we tested, there are more than two dozen options to choose from online—from classic white and graphite gray to more vivid hues like terracotta and Mediterranean blue (pictured below). Plus, the thick decorative border lends the towel some extra sophistication.

How It Performed Long-Term

In our long-term testing of this towel, we grew to love it even more. After three months, we found that it maintained its fluffy, spa-like feel and was easy to launder. While some shoppers might wish the price were a tad cheaper so it'd be easier to stock up on several at a time, we think the towel is well worth the cost.

  • Great value considering price point

What We Don’t Like

  • Must create free Italic account to complete purchase

If you're looking for a great towel that offers a ton of bang for your buck, consider the Italic Serene Ultraplush Australian Cotton Towels, which earned perfect marks across the board during our lab testing. They're available in bath towel and bath sheet sizes—we purchased the bath sheets, which provided ample coverage.

We found that the bath sheets feel very high quality with their heavyweight construction and tight weave. The texture feels plush and thick, but we did notice they lose a bit of softness post-wash. Despite this, they were still softer than many other options we tested, and we found that the towels held up nicely after multiple rounds in the washer and dryer, with no loose threads, snags, or other signs of wear. In the lab, we noticed the towels performed very well during both our absorbency and dry tests, as the bath sheets effectively and quickly soaked up the liquid, then dried in just 90 minutes.

In addition to the bath sheets and towels, you can also purchase hand towel sets, washcloth sets, and luxe or deluxe sets (which come with a variety of products). One thing to note is that you'll have to create a free Italic account to purchase the sheets; however, if you upgrade to the brand's Italic Bold Membership for $60 per year, you can get the two-pack of bath sheets for $15 off. Still, at just $55 (without an Italic membership) for the two bath sheets, we are highly impressed with the performance and relatively low price point of this product.

What We Don't Like

  • Some inconsistencies in quality

At $12 for one towel, the Casaluna Organic Bath Towel is one of the most budget-friendly options that we've tested—but that’s not its only selling point. It's also exceptionally absorbent, and it really impressed us in this category.

This towel is exceptionally thick, soft, and plush. It effectively soaked up water with ease in our at-home testing, leaving us dry in no time. Even when we only used a small section of the towel to dry off, we found it did a great job. We long-term tested this towel in a humid environment, and we found that not only was the drying time reasonable, but it also never got that musty towel smell after hanging it up.

Although we didn’t notice any signs of imperfections or wear during our real-world tests, we did find a few loose threads upon inspection in the lab. We’re not sure if this was an isolated issue, so you’ll want to be aware of potential inconsistencies in quality before purchasing. But for just $12, we think this affordable bath towel is definitely worth considering, based on its soft texture and impressive performance in our testing. Plus, it's OEKO-TEX Made in Green certified, which means it passed a specific standard for environmentally friendly and worker-friendly manufacturing facilities, and made with GOTS-certified organic cotton

Depending on your schedule, bath towels are an item you’ll use nearly every day—so oftentimes, it’s worth it to splurge. Out of the dozens of towels we've tested, Boll & Branch’s Plush Bath Towel is one of our top choices for its quality construction, impressive performance, and thoughtful design. Made with organic long-staple cotton, these towels have a soft and plush feel that you’ll appreciate use after use. Even after multiple runs through the washer and dryer, this towel held up well and continued to feel like a luxury product.

A main selling point of the Temescal Organic Towel is its absorbency. During our real-world testing, this towel soaked up water quickly and effectively, and it felt cozy to wrap up in after a hot shower. In our tests, the towel scored exceptionally well in terms of absorbency. And we were pleasantly surprised by how quickly it dried, despite how plush and dense it is. While this product is more expensive than other options we tested, we think it’s well worth the price tag considering its luxurious texture and top-notch performance.

  • Great value for the price

  • GOTS-certified organic cotton

  • Absorbent and fast-drying (with hook loop)

  • Look and felt the same after one month of use

What We Don't Like

  • Not as soft as other options

If you're looking for an everyday towel with a price that sits somewhere between our Best Overall and Best Budget options, we recommend West Elm Everyday Textured Organic Towel. Not only did it garner perfect marks for its absorbency in our lab testing, but it also fully dried within the two-hour testing window, which makes it great for frequent use. We also appreciated the built-in loop for hanging it up.

This towel held up well after washing and drying, and it seemed quite durable to us. One additional perk for eco-minded shoppers: This towel is made with cotton that's certified organic by GOTS. Organic materials typically cost much more than non-organic, so we are pleasantly surprised by this certification.

This isn't among the softest towels we've used, and its thin construction might be unappealing if you love a plush towel. But it certainly gets the job done, and with a price tag under $20, we think it's a great option.

How It Performed Long-Term

After testing this towel at home for one month, we were even more impressed than during our lab tests. We found it to be pleasantly absorbent, quick-drying, and large enough for comfortable coverage. We noted that the texture of the towel stayed the same after it dried, and even after routine use and washing. All in all, it's a reliable, effective towel at a great price point.

  • Lightweight yet absorbent

  • Waffle weave dries faster than many terry options

  • Holds up well over time

  • GOTS-certified cotton

What We Don't Like

  • Waffle weave can take some getting used to

Lightweight and exceptionally absorbent, waffle weave towels are a highly effective and design-forward alternative to your standard terry cloth towel. Our favorite of the category is the Citizenry Mara Organic Waffle Towels, which seriously impressed us during our long-term tests. If you’re used to using thick and fluffy towels, waffle weave towels may take some getting used to—in fact, we weren’t fans of this towel upon initial rounds of testing. However, after a month of consistent use, we grew to love the performance and overall construction of the towel. The waffle weave adds a lot of texture to the surface, and unlike many of the other options we tested, it’s very lightweight.

We were seriously impressed with the absorbency and drying time of the towel, and we found that it was actually more effective in both areas than its thicker terry cloth counterparts. Because of its thinner construction, the towel dried completely in between uses. Over the course of a month, we found that the towel held up well after multiple rounds of washing and drying. The construction quality looked and felt as good as new, which is especially notable since some fluffier towels tend to lose their softness over time.

What We Like

  • Luxurious feel at a reasonable price point

  • Absorbent, heavyweight construction

  • Visually appealing design

What We Don’t Like

  • Not the quickest drying time

A plush towel can provide a soft and luxurious feel when drying off after a shower, allowing for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience compared to thinner, rougher towels. Southern Living’s Turkish Cotton & Modal Bath Towel boasts a fluffy and plush texture we couldn’t get enough of. (Southern Living is owned by The Spruce’s parent company, Dotdash Meredith.) We also were impressed with its visually appealing design, which featured a decorative series of five double-welts on each end rather than the standard band. The loops seemed on and compact, and we found no visible imperfections upon arrival. This towel was definitely on the heavier side at 700 grams per square meter (GSM), which means it has a dense, sturdy construction.

Although the towel performed exceptionally well during the absorbency test and earned a perfect score in that category, we did find it took a bit longer to completely dry (around two hours) than some other options we tested. However, this tends to be standard for plusher, heavier towels. After following the care instructions, we appreciated just how well the product held up. The soft texture didn’t change post-wash, and the towel felt as good as new with no signs of wear. After a month of consistent use, we remain impressed with the towel’s performance, texture, and overall quality.

What We Like

  • High-quality, tight weave

  • Lightweight and absorbent

  • Gets softer as you use and wash it

What We Don’t Like

  • Not ideal if you like a plush towel

  • Pricey

For a lightweight and highly absorbent bath towel, you can’t go wrong with Coyuchi’s Mediterranean Organic Bath Towel. Like most Turkish bath towels, this product is thinner and less plush than your standard terrycloth towel. While we wouldn't necessarily describe it as super soft from the get-go, we don't think it feels scratchy or rough either. During our testing, we found this towel to have a high-quality construction. The surface features a small waffle weave construction that feels tight and sturdy, and the stitching and seams are smooth and even. Additionally, the towel has tightly twisted tassels at both ends for a stylish flair. The colors on our test towel looked bright, even, and saturated.

This towel earned a perfect score in both the absorbency and drying time categories. It dried completely in just about an hour. After following the care instructions, this towel has held up exceptionally well, too. We noted that it looked brand-new after three washes. Additionally, we found the texture became a bit softer and fuzzier post-wash. We also love that the product is GOTS and Made Safe certified, meaning it’s made with organic cotton, in accordance with strict environmental and ethical standards. While it's on the pricey side and won't appeal to folks who love a super-plush towel, we love this lightweight, versatile towel.

What We Like

  • Thick, plush texture

  • Remains soft after washing

  • Warm and cozy

  • Dried well in our tests and didn't get musty

What We Don’t Like

  • Some skincare products may bleach dyes

  • More specific washing instructions than some other towels

A soft towel can enhance your bathroom routine, and Restoration Hardware's Ultra-Soft Turkish Towel provides a truly cozy experience. During lab testing, we were immediately impressed by the luxurious texture of this towel.

The towel feels plush and thick on both sides with a hefty weight of 750 GSM for an ideal post-shower experience. After following the care instructions, we didn't notice any significant difference in texture or quality, including any missed stitches, pulled loops, or loose threads. Plus, we found it handled our stain and abrasion tests quite well, suggesting impressive durability. We also appreciate how absorbent this towel is—we gave it a high score in that testing category. We were expecting a very lengthy dry time, given the weight and thickness of the towel, but we found it was 80 percent dry in just two hours.

Based on our lab tests, we think it's an upgrade from most everyday towels. Just keep in mind that it has higher-maintenance care instructions than some other towels. The manufacturer recommends machine washing on the gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent, then tumble drying on low and taking it out of the dryer right when the cycle ends. You'll also want to skip fabric softeners and bleach to maintain its softness and absorbency. The brand indicates that certain skincare products may also affect the towel, including those with benzoyl peroxide. The price of this towel is just about $50, which is middle of the road within this list. If you have a Restoration Hardware membership (which costs $175 annually), you'll get it for a discounted price of $36 instead.

How It Performed Long-Term

Despite its washing instructions, we found this towel to be fairly simple to maintain in at-home testing. After a month of consistent use, we were impressed by the towel's absorbency, texture, and coverage. The thick, heavy towel soaked up water quickly—and it also reliably dried between uses from day to day, even when hung in a fairly muggy bathroom without a fan. We did notice some bleaching on the fibers of our test towel, which we attributed to facial cleansers and other products. With that in mind, we'd recommend sticking to the white colorway if you think your skincare or makeup products might bleach the material. But if softness is your aim, this towel is a sure bet.

  • Sturdy, stain-resistant construction

  • Dries quickly (with hook loop for hanging)

  • High-end appearance

What We Don’t Like

  • On the smaller side

On the hunt for a towel that can withstand a bit of wear and tear? Look no further than Hay Mono Cotton Bath Towel, which has a long-lasting, durable construction. It felt thick and soft to the touch upon removing it from its package, but it didn’t feel overly heavy.

In terms of durability, it maintained the same texture after we washed and dried it. It passed our abrasion tests with flying colors, and we didn’t notice any snags or loose threads, proving the strength of the thread fibers. We applied foundation and mascara to the material, and both stains completely came out in the wash.

It soaked up all the water in our lab testing, leading to a perfect absorbency score. You can hang it up to dry using the attached hook loop, and we loved that it only took 1.5 hours to fully dry during our lab testing. Rather than the standard band, this towel features a stitched logo on either end (on one side only), which reminds us of a high-end hotel towel. We did notice, however, that the towel's on the small side when compared with other towels we've tested.

How It Performed Long-Term

After regular usage and multiple rounds in the washer and dryer, we found that this towel held up exceptionally well over the course of one month of at-home testing. It never held onto stains, even after we used self-tanning products. We were impressed that it fully dried between uses, even when hung from the loop in a relatively humid bathroom without a fan. We think this towel is reasonably priced and performed well in all other testing categories, especially durability. So if you want a towel that’ll last and don't mind the slightly smaller dimensions, this may be the pick for you.

For a heavier towel that will stand the test of time, we love the Classic Turkish Cotton Towels from Parachute. During testing, we were impressed with its thoughtful design, as the towel features a ribbed border and boasts a luxurious, hotel-quality construction. At 700 GSM, this is definitely one of the heavier options we tested and has a thick, substantial weight. We appreciate its plush, fluffy feel after getting out of the shower.

This towel performed well during our absorbency test, earning a perfect score in that category. We found that it took around 90 minutes to dry, which is longer than other options but still seems reasonable considering its thickness. Post-wash, the towel held up nicely, but we did notice it lost some of its softness. Still, we found it held up very well over the course of one month, and because of its sturdy construction, we’re confident it’ll last for years to come.

If you like to shop for products that are manufactured with you and the environment in mind, don't scroll past Coyuchi’s Air Weight Organic Bath Towel. This option is GOTS, Fair Trade, and Made Safe certified, meaning it’s made with organic fibers and follows ecologically and socially responsible practices throughout the manufacturing process. During testing, we found that the towel becomes softer and fluffier post-wash. We noted that the washed towel was (unexpectedly) noticeably thicker and plusher in comparison with the unwashed towel. This option doesn’t feel overly soft, but its medium-weight construction feels high-quality.

In our lab testing, the towel proved to be highly absorbent, with a drying time of about 90 minutes. Over the course of one month, this towel held up nicely, too. After the first wash, the texture remained consistent throughout the testing period. And while this towel comes at a steeper price point, we think it’s well worth it for those who value a high-quality towel made with eco-friendly materials.

“A bathroom should be just as beautiful as the bedroom, so finding a bath collection that beautifully coordinates with [your] bedding will accentuate the home overall,” Smith says. If you’re wanting to coordinate your towels with your existing decor, the Ralph Lauren Payton Body Sheet is worth considering. Available in 23 rich hues, ranging from spa white to sage green, you can seamlessly keep your bathroom cohesive and Instagram-worthy.

During our tests, this towel earned perfect scores in both quality and texture, and we found the product to feel substantially thick, soft, and well-made. It's also highly absorbent and dries extremely quickly. It also took just 11 minutes to dry, which impressed us given how plush the material is. Additionally, note that we tested the body sheet rather than the standard bath towel, and it measures 72 by 32 inches. The bath sheet is also quite pricey. If you don’t need the extra fabric a bath sheet can provide and you'd like to save over $30, we recommend opting for the collection’s bath towel, which is 58 by 30 inches in size and costs under $40.

What We Like

  • Super lightweight and packable

  • Quick drying time

  • Gets softer with each wash

What We Don’t Like

  • Thinner than most options

Turkish towels are generally a lighter weight and faster-drying option than terry towels—and the Cacala’s Pestemal Turkish Bath Towel is no exception. Because of its unique construction, it’s not just a great addition to your bath towel rotation; it’s also suitable for staying dry at the beach, pool, or spa. Plus, the lightweight construction makes the towel extremely travel-friendly and versatile for a wide range of activities. And since it's less expensive than many other Turkish towels, you'll likely feel better about toting around (and you won't be heartbroken if you accidentally lose track of it in transit).

This doesn't feel like your typical cotton towel. It’s a lot thinner, more lightweight, and less fluffy than your average bath towel. While this might not be everyone’s preference, it’s still a soft, high-quality, and versatile option worth considering. This towel boasts a thoughtful design with its herringbone weave, braided fringe tassels, and stylish look.

During our lab tests, we noticed this option dried very quickly after being soaked, which was expected due to its airy texture. The majority of the towel was dry after 30 minutes, making it a great towel to take on the go. Additionally, we were impressed by how well the product held up post-wash; the fabric actually felt softer and smoother after each wash. Some of the braided tassels began to unravel, but other than that, there were no visible signs of wear.

What We Don't Like

If you live in a larger household, you may want to opt to personalize your towels in order to keep track of which towel belongs to who. Lands’ End allows you to add a monogram, embroidery design, or both to their Premium Supima Cotton Bath Sheets for just $8. Plus, the towels are available in about 15 gorgeous hues. Made from Supima cotton, this towel impressed us with its softness, plushness, and thickness. In fact, we found that the overall texture quality surpassed many other cotton towels we’ve tested.

The towel dried us off quickly and efficiently in testing. And despite its heavier weight, we didn’t have any issues with drying time. After multiple rounds in the wash, we noted some shrinkage in the band, but apart from that, the overall quality of the bath sheet remained top-notch over the course of a month. And in our lab tests, the towel even stood up to abrasion and makeup stains.

Note that in our lab and at-home tests, we tried out the bath sheet, which is much larger than the average bath towel. However, the retailer also offers a towel set, standard bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths in the same style to suit your preferences.
