China has exported its first batch of standardized new energy locomotives, marking a major milestone in the country's push to internationalize its green rail technology standards. According to the National Railway Administration, the locomotives—jointly developed by CRRC and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), Kazakhstan’s national railway operator—were rolled out by CRRC Ziyang and shipped to Kazakhstan in June.

Specifically engineered for Central Asia’s harsh winter conditions, the locomotives feature a hybrid system combining a low-emission diesel engine and a high-capacity lithium iron phosphate battery. They integrate green, digital, and intelligent technologies, with design specifications allowing them to operate in temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius.

Equipped with an EU Stage III-compliant diesel engine, an intelligent diagnostic system, and rapid-charging capability, the locomotives also include a four-level safety protection system. Compared to conventional diesel locomotives, they achieve over 45% fuel savings, reduce noise by 80%, and lower pollutant emissions by 45% to 83%. Each unit is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 240 metric tons annually.

The locomotives were built to China’s standardized new energy locomotive platform and passed the EAC certification process for the Eurasian Economic Union. This marks the first time Chinese standards have been adopted as the basis for overseas certification in this sector—a breakthrough for China’s rail equipment industry. The project represents a significant step in promoting green, low-carbon transport solutions under the Belt and Road Initiative, offering a Chinese approach to sustainable mobility for partner countries.
