On June 1, construction of the ±800 kV ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission line from Gansu to Zhejiang reached a major milestone as it successfully crossed the Ningxia–Hunan UHVDC project in Qingshui County, Tianshui, Gansu Province. The crossing marks a key breakthrough for the "Longdian Ruzhe" project and paves the way for faster progress in the next construction phases.

According to project managers, the crossing site posed significant challenges due to its mountainous terrain, complex geology, and difficult access. It had to be completed before the Ningxia–Hunan line entered live commissioning to avoid potential power interruptions. More than 300 workers were mobilized over a 50-day period, using a phased, sectional construction strategy to keep both UHV projects on track.

The Gansu–Zhejiang line is the world’s first cross-regional transmission project to adopt flexible direct current (VSC-HVDC) technology at both the sending and receiving ends. Spanning 2,370 kilometers from Wuwei in Gansu to Shaoxing in Zhejiang, the line runs through six provinces and regions—Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui, and Zhejiang. With a transmission capacity of 8 million kilowatts and a total investment of approximately RMB 35.3 billion, the line is expected to enter operation in 2027.

Once operational, the project will transmit over 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually from Gansu to Zhejiang, with green power accounting for more than half. It will support the consumption of over 21.2 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy per year, replace roughly 6.4 million tonnes of coal, and reduce carbon emissions by about 17 million tonnes annually.
