China has issued nine national standards for product carbon footprints, covering sectors such as livestock products, electrolytic aluminum, chemical fibers, and plastic goods, officials announced at the 2025 National Nonferrous Metals “Dual Carbon” Conference held on June 8.

Among them, Greenhouse Gases — Product Carbon Footprint Quantification Method and Requirements — Electrolytic Aluminum stands out as the country’s first national standard specifically targeting an industrial product. The standard outlines the boundaries for carbon accounting, calculation methods, publication format, data quality requirements, and traceability protocols.

In 2024, China’s recycled aluminum output exceeded 10 million tonnes. Producing recycled aluminum consumes only about 5% of the energy required for primary electrolytic aluminum, and each tonne used in place of the latter can reduce CO emissions by roughly 10 tonnes. As part of the country’s broader climate strategy, the electrolytic aluminum sector was included this year in the expanded national emissions trading system (ETS). The program now covers 98 electrolytic aluminum enterprises with a combined production capacity of nearly 45 million tonnes—more than 60% of global output.
